Heavy Equipment Fire Investigation

Overview
Vista Engineering was retained to investigate the origin and cause of a fire that destroyed a portable woodchipper. The fire occurred shortly after routine engine service was performed on the equipment, raising questions about whether the service was performed properly and whether it contributed to the fire.
Investigation
Our engineers conducted a thorough physical examination of the fire-damaged equipment. The investigation focused on the engine compartment and surrounding components, systematically identifying and documenting all fire damage and potential ignition sources.
The examination revealed that the rear engine cover had been dislodged, likely during or after the recent service work. This exposed critical electrical components to mechanical interference and heat from the engine.
Findings
- A dislodged rear engine cover exposed electrical wiring to mechanical and thermal damage.
- Electrical arcing damage was identified on multiple wiring harnesses consistent with a short-circuit ignition source.
- Systemic fastener deficiencies were found throughout the engine compartment, indicating improper reassembly after service.
- The pattern and progression of fire damage was consistent with an electrical ignition originating at the rear of the engine.
Conclusion
Vista Engineering concluded that the fire was caused by electrical arcing resulting from a dislodged rear engine cover and improperly fastened components following engine service. The investigation provided the client with clear, defensible technical findings to support their insurance claim resolution.
